HopCat was envisioned, designed, stocked, and staffed with one mission in mind: To bring you great beer. What is great beer? It's a beer made with care and pride. It might be a local beer or one from across the globe. It could be your usual pint, or a beer that you had no idea existed. Every once in a while, it's a beer you never would have ordered but for the fact that your server or bartender suggested it.
HopCat Detroit opened on December 13, 2014 (yes, that was 12/13/14!) in a historic building at the corner of Woodward and Canfield. We offer Michigan's largest tap selection -- 130 craft beer taps -- and some pretty excellent food made from scratch in our kitchen. Our second floor features the Huma Room, an entertainment venue with a full bar and 30 beer selections which is available for corporate rentals, parties and other special events.
Just six months after opening HopCat was lauded for Best New Bar in Detroit, Best Beer Selection and Best Fries by Hour Detroit Magazine. Metro Times readers also named HopCat's craft beer selection best in the city. Such recognition builds on the praise we've received since opening our Grand Rapids location in January 2008. We’re listed as one of the Top 50 bars in the US by Draft Magazine. Beer Advocate Magazine has ranked us as the #3 Beer Bar in the world, CraftBeer.com has rated us the #2 beer bar in the U.S., and in 2012, 2013 and 2015 RateBeer.com ranked HopCat - Grand Rapids as the #1 Brewpub in the United States. We’re humbled by the response that craft beer lovers all over the world have shown to our philosophy, and are truly grateful for the simple fact that we are lucky enough to be located in the Midwest, where craft beer is way of life.
Kids and Smoking
HopCat is a bar. If you’re under 21 you can come in before 9 p.m. (We ask people under 21 leave the building by 10 p.m.). After 9 p.m., we will not admit anyone under 21. We do have a limited number of high chairs for your little ones. We also have a children's menu.
Please note that you cannot smoke anywhere on our property, including the patio.

Before emailing us, though, here are some answers to frequently asked questions (FAQ):
Q: Do you take reservations?
A: Yes. Sort of. We take a LIMITED number of reservations for groups of 8 or more. We generally do not take reservations on Friday and Saturday from 6-10 p.m.. Call us to find out if we have a slot available.
Q: Can I rent the Huma Room (our 2nd floor venue) for a private event?
A: Yes! Contact our Events Coordinator, Richie Garcia, to discuss your needs at email@example.com or click the red button.
Q: When will you have _____ on tap?
A: We strive to have all of our beers listed on our tap list on the website. We also post major beer releases on our Facebook, Twitter and instagram accounts (both are @hopcatd).
Q: Are you hiring?
A: We are usually looking for excellent people to join our HopCat family. If you think you've got the chops, please come in and talk to the manager (afternoons between 2 and 5 are often the best time to do so) or email your resume to firstname.lastname@example.org.
Q: Do you have gluten-free beers and food?
A: Yes. We have a selection of gluten-free beers in bottles as well as some ciders on tap that are naturally gluten free. We also have wine and cocktails. Our gluten free menu items are limited, however we can adjust many of our regular items to make them without bread or other items containing gluten.
Q: Do you sell gift cards/T-shirts and other HopCat stuff?
A: Yes, we do. We sell gift cards in store and online (click the link in the lower left corner of this site). Each store has a unique merchandise selection which we do not currently sell online.
Q: Can I fill a growler?
A: Yes. Our Local 30 growler fills are just $12 every day! Michigan law allows us to fill your clean growlers (and sell clean empty ones). Some limited release selections are not available in growlers. Ask your server or bartender for details.
Q: Will you donate to our charity/auction/fundraiser?
A: Maybe. Email all requests for charitable donations to email@example.com. We assess these requests on a case-by-case basis.
